Do you have an old white skirt lying around that you no longer wear? Why not turn it into a stylish new top with a collar and puff sleeves with ruffle? In this tutorial, I will show you how to recycle your old white skirt and turn it into a lovely top in just a few simple steps.
Materials:
- Old white skirt
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Pins
- Iron
- Fabric marker
- Ruler
- Buttons
Instructions:
Cut the Skirt: Cut the skirt along the waistline to separate the waistband from the skirt. Then, cut off the hem of the skirt to make a straight edge. Cut the skirt according to the length you want for your top.
Cut the Sleeves: Cut two rectangles from the remaining skirt material for the sleeves. Make sure the width is the same as the width of the top and the length is twice the length of your desired sleeve length plus 2 inches. Fold the rectangles in half and cut a curve at the top edge for the sleeve cap.
Cut the Collar: Cut a rectangle from the remaining skirt material for the collar. Make sure the width is twice the width of the top and the length is the desired length of the collar plus 1 inch.
Sew the Top: With the right sides together, sew the sides of the top. Then, sew the sleeves to the top, matching the straight edges of the sleeve with the sides of the top. Hem the sleeves and the bottom of the top.
Attach the Collar: Fold the collar in half lengthwise, with the wrong side facing out. Sew the short ends of the collar together. Turn the collar right side out and press it flat. With the right side of the collar facing up, pin it to the neckline of the top. Sew the collar to the top, leaving a small opening to insert the buttons.
Add Buttons: Insert the buttons into the buttonholes. You can use the existing buttonholes from the skirt, or you can make new ones.
Add the Ruffle: Cut a long strip of fabric from the remaining skirt material for the ruffle. The width of the strip should be twice the desired width of the ruffle, and the length should be at least twice the length of the neckline of the top. Hem the short edges of the ruffle. Then, sew a basting stitch along one long edge of the ruffle. Gather the ruffle by pulling the basting stitch.
Sew the Ruffle: With the right side of the ruffle facing up, pin it to the neckline of the top, starting from the center back. Adjust the gathers evenly and sew the ruffle to the top.
Final Touches: Press the top and the collar with an iron to give it a crisp finish. Your new top is now ready to wear!
